Knowing is Everything …

I was really struggling to determine whether or not I wanted to see this movie. Upon writing this, I realize Nicholas Cage has been in a lot of movies that I enjoy. It escapes me how I couldn’t have wanted to see this movie. Maybe it was the horrible reviews I heard about Ghostrider.
The action scenes were well thought out, especially in the first instance where he discovers what the second set of numbers mean. When he gets out of his car and you see what he is approaching, you think one thing is going to happen and then something completely different occurs. Well, maybe you will be expecting something else to happen now! What bothered me about the actions scenes were how real they made them look. I know there are war movies out there that are way more graphic, and that is part of what the audience wants when going to see those movies. Maybe the scenes were made to be that graphic to help set the mood of how the movie will end.
I also felt that the relationship between Nicholas Cage and his father wasn’t developed enough to make us care too much about it. You only get a small idea of what the problem was, and very little interaction between them to understand their situation. They come together at the end for an attempt at a heartwarming scene, but it didn’t really touch me as much as it could have.
One thing that the movie did have that appealed to me was the deep connection that is made between science and spirituality. The last half hour of the movie really came together for me and drew me in better than the first half of the movie. It was when you have an inkling of who the creepy, mute men might be where an even more eerie feeling comes about you to what might happen at the end of the movie.
Overall, the movie was very intriguing to somebody like me who has a mind that is constantly seeking truth and imagining what else could be out there. However, the end was too disheartening even though very realistic with a sense of inevitability for even the audience.

I’d have to say that was a pretty well thought out accurate review. I think having a strong interest in Astronomy and Astrophysics kind of made this movie a little more freaky for me than it will be for most audiences. Aside from the sci-fi part of the movie, I was demoralized at how likely something like that could happen.

I have to say that I agree with much of the review except for the ending. In this respect, this movie reminded me a lot of Signs. Knowing was intriguing and creepy through most of the movie. (I kept thinking: “How are they going to tie this together? Who ARE these guys?”) And when they finally revealed the mystery, I was very disappointed. Though the astronomical aspects were fascinating, as well as the introduction of alien life, the ending was way too surreal for me. It left me feeling as if I was under chemical influence. Sometimes it’s just too hard to make the ending live up to the suspense.
